2024 UPDATE-NO VENDING ALLOWED BY RESIDENTS OR NON-RESIDENTS PER CITY OF TORRANCE
The history of how the Seaside Holiday Lights displays began.... Our neighborhood holiday lights display began in 1984 when resident Bob Solomon saw a neighbor decorate their elm trees with lights and he decided he would do the same. Bob and his wife decided to pass out flyers asking other neighbors to follow suit. The result was a beautiful lights display that attracted visitors to the neighborhood that first year. And so the tradition began & now upwards of 1000's of people visit every year!
There is a long standing rumor that if you move to or buy a home in the 'Christmas Lights' area in Torrance, you are required to decorate. Is that true? Definitely not. Residents participate only if they want to. Particpation is 100% voluntary and there is no pressure to decorate. Many residents LOVE to decorate and spend endless hours making their own decorations. Sometimes those decorations have been passed down from owner to owner over a span of decades. The holiday lights displays are often a labor of love for many residents as families spend a lot of time, money & energy putting up and taking down the lights every single year. Many residents stay home during Thanksgiving weekend just to put their lights up for everyone to enjoy right away!
Is the holiday lights a city event? This website is operated & sponsored by the residents of the Seaside neighborhood. It's the one-stop spot to get the most updated info from the residents that put on the holiday light displays. The City of Torrance does not fund or manage the lights or displays. The holiday lights are 100% voluntary.
